Keep in mind: breakfasts of champions
With as much window space as wall, this quaint and inviting corner cafe has won the spot as top breakfast pick with incredible angel-light miniature scones, press pots of fragrant loose black tea, and creamy omelets and frittatas including the Hangtown Frittata, packed with plump oysters, generous chunks of salty bacon, creamy Asiago cheese, and a dusting of scallions.
You might sit next to a politico, rocker or noted author at this longtime eastside breakfast and lunch joint, but people come here less to be seen than for the reliably excellent classics: the German pancake or the huevos rancheros. Newer pretenders to Zell’s morning pre-eminence come and go, but its staying power is as consistent as the pair of airy buttermilk scones that arrive—gratis—shortly after you sit down.
A really good breakfast spot is a treasure and Zell's is one of the best. Their salmon eggs benedict is so rich and tasty that it literally makes me feel high. The portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and the wait staff are very friendly and unpretentious. Please keep it up Zell's!
Zell's An American Cafe
This is consistently one of my favorite breakfast haunts. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly. The food is varied and yummy with changing specials. Best of all, each person gets 2 complementary small scones to "tide" you over until your food comes. You may have to wait to get in on weekends, but it is worth it.
OH..., the Eggs Benedict!
One of my measuring sticks of a great breakfast joint is the Eggs Benedict. Truly an Art form I think. The hollandaise sauce must be just right, not too salty, not too greasy, and no strange off-tastes. The eggs must be soft, soft, soft. Too many places over-doo the eggs. I have to say Zells makes the best Benedict in Portland, hands down. I have tried a number of their other dishes as well. Always turns out fantastic.
Fantastic Breakfast Spot!
While staying in Portland I happened upon this spot and it was so good I went twice in a row as I was leaving for the Bay Area the next day. The black board specials are fantastic and incorporate fresh in season veggies and fruit. It is in a good neighborhood and worth the drive. Hat's Off to a GREAT breakfast! If I lived in Portland I would make this a weekly event.
Zell's: An American Cafe
Zell's is one of those places that delights the mind and body. Its small size, friendly waitstaff, and lace curtains all make you feel as if you've stepped into a European cafe. Although Zell's serves lunch, breakfast is the main draw, as you can see most every day. The exceptional food is well-prepared, whether you choose eggs Benedict, a smoked salmon scramble, or the much-applauded German pancakes. Making decisions even harder is the specials board, which features a number of great options you haven't yet considered. Be prepared for a wait if you don't get here early, though. Zell's is a popular place.
Good Food & Very Friendly Service
In addition to their full selection breakfast/lunch menu, the chalkboard specials are great. The scones, eggs, potatoes, and coffee were all fantastic. This place really knows how to give you a wide variety of options for a great breakfast experience.
Mini scones galore
Delicious breakfast place. Fresh food, apple german pancakes, and great staff. Dine in or take out! They give you miniature scones with every order.
Definitely a must for all locals and visitors in Portland. Great atmosphere, good prices, excellent food. Highly recommended. In a town full of great eateries, this is high on the list
Zell's an American Cafe
My wife and I found "Zell's an American Cafe" on "Portland's Yahoo! Local" and the reviews looked good so we went this morning. We had the eggs benedict and a potato dish with veggies and cheese. We rated both a 10. "Hope" was our waitress and was totally nice to deal with. Our coffee, which was very good, never got less than halfway down before she politely refilled it. Hope also took the time to recommend several good dinner spots in Portland for us to try (Zell's serves breakfast and lunch only). She is a fabulous ambassador for the city. Service was 10. We look forward to returning and trying more of their creations such as the salmon benedict.
Zell's an American Café
In Portland on weekend mornings, it’s not unusual to see crowds of people standing outside of diners, waiting for breakfast. Zell’s is one of those spots, a quintessential Portland breakfast (and lunch) destination, crowded with casual Eastside types enjoying good, honest fare at one of the most laid-back cafés in town. It's the kind of place where your coffee mug will be refilled even before you put it back down on the table. Everyone is friendly here, and if you have to wait a bit, there are scores of newspapers and magazines around to ease you through the hunger pangs. The omelets are standouts---wild mushroom, unusual cheeses, plus interesting vegetable combinations. There’s always fresh fruit, and the kitchen has a way with waffles, pancakes and scones that puts them in a higher league than most.
